Mariel del Puerto is a filmmaker based in Miami Beach, whose work is a tribute to the Miami neorealism she has crafted herself. Her cinema is a form of visual poetry, where the cinematography captures the essence of everyday life with natural light that becomes a protagonist in its own right. Mariel works with both professional and non-professional actors, but what matters most to her is the authenticity they bring to the screen.
Her distinctive signature lies in the complete creation of her characters and their visual world. Mariel is the art director of her films, designing the costumes and sets entirely from her vision – exactly how she imagines each character in her mind, and how she wants the world to see them.
My Experience
From the beginning, I found the camera to be the perfect medium for telling stories that capture the essence of everyday life. My experience started with short films made during my academic training, where I explored neorealism in my own way, using natural light and non-professional actors.
At the same time, I have extensively experimented in directing music videos, collaborating with local artists in Miami and blending music with a unique visual narrative. Thanks to that experience, I now know how to lead each production I work on, having refined my direction with actors.
These experiences have prepared me for the new chapter of my career: producing my own short films, where I will further explore the narrative, identity, and emotions that define my style.
What I want
I am now entering a new chapter of my life, where I am preparing to create short films and future feature films that will each feel like a canvas. I aspire for my work to be instantly recognizable, for people to see a story and say, “That is a Mariel del Puerto film.” My style is a unique kind of neorealism, filled with poetry – expressed in the visuals, the sense of time, the natural, and the everyday. At the same time, it reflects my personal vision of characters, their wardrobe, and the world I carry in my mind. That is the essence I want my work to reflect.
